The theme of the game

Call of Juarez is an epic adventure western themed FPS game1. The game was initially conceived as a reaction to World War II and science fiction games dominating the first-person shooter genre2. The designers drew inspiration from a range of Western-themed films, TV shows, and literature, as well as some real-life stories and figures2. The player alternately assumes the roles of two distinct, antagonistic characters: a sneaking fugitive Billy and his hunter the reverend Ray1.
